King Street Restaurant Makes ‘bible’ Listing for 38th Consecutive Year (Knutsford Guardian, 28/09/15

A KNUTSFORD restaurant has been included in the ‘bible’ for top places to eat out – for the 38th consecutive year.

Some of the dishes that caught the eye the experts when they visited the Belle Epoque include line caught Cornish seabass served with razor clams, pickled oysters, morels and a champagne froth, and desserts that include blackcurrant liquorice ice cream and Vimto jelly.

The Belle Epoque has been awarded perhaps its most prestigious accolade of the past 42 years, in the form of Two AA Rosettes. What’s more, the hotel has also been awarded the AA’s Four Star rating.

The long-established and hugely prestigious Rosette Scheme recognises successful cooking at different levels across the UK. Success or failure in achieving Rosettes is based on an anonymous visit by an AA inspector.

A spokesperson for The AA said “Only about 10% of restaurants nationwide are of a standard that is worthy of one rosette and above, so to achieve two is indeed a huge achievement, and not to be underestimated”.

As an independent restaurant, the achievement is perhaps even more notable.

Proprietor and Managing Director Matthew Mooney said “When the inspector announced himself at the end of his stay and asked to speak to the owner…well, let’s just say Alex Ferguson coined a phrase for it! You know you, your team, your restaurant and the culmination of years of hard work are going to be judged by the most stringent industry standards. One must not forget that this is the same organisation that holds the likes of Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsey to account”.

The whole staff team have played their part and really stepped up to the challenge. This was reflected in the inspector giving our hotel the AA Four Star rating. Our housekeeping girls were delighted, and have already set their sights on a future Five Star rating”.

One team member in particular deserves special recognition following the award – Head Chef Kevin Lynn. “I’m personally delighted for our Head Chef Kevin Lynn who has placed himself under huge pressure to set the required standard” Matthew added.

The Belle Epoque are also keen to show thanks to their loyal customers, and as such will be having an ‘a la carte April’, opening on all Saturdays throughout the month.

“Without our extremely loyal and wonderful customers, The Belle Epoque would simply not exist. We are really looking forward to ‘a la carte April’, and it would be lovely to celebrate this time with old and new customers alike” Matthew said.

The Belle Epoque has also been named in the Michelin Guide for 2015 and The Good Hotel Guide.

Bookings for ‘a la carte April’ can be made by calling 01565 633060 or emailing

Winter portrait shoot at the Belle Epoque Monday, January 12, 2015

I recently took part in a really great styled shoot at The Belle Epoque in Knutsford. I always enjoy portrait shoots like these as I get to meet and work in a team alongside amazing suppliers and this shoot was no exception – everybody involved in the day was brilliant and I could not recommend them enough. Although it was a very cold day, we braved the chilly winter weather and took some photographs outside before heading in to the warmth of the Belle Epoque. We even had some snow too!

A huge thank you to all the fantastic suppliers who made the day what it was; make up by Maxine Smith, hair by Vicky M, styling by Jan Clarke, dresses from Pearl Bridal, flowers by Laurel Weddings and of course our two models, Jessica and Beth from Boss Model Management, who were absolutely amazing and so great to work with. It was also great to work alongside the brilliant photographer Toni Darcy and film maker Tom Loveridge.

The grandiose Belle Époque Hotel and Restaurant has been on my to-do-list for quite some time. It’s opulence and reputation for great food has had me tinkering with the idea of planning an impromptu pit-stop to Knutsford, Cheshire – I’m pleased to say, it finally happened over the weekend!

Since it was the other half’s birthday, I was counting on this being a somewhat ‘special’ evening. The Belle Époque is a seriously beautiful building – I adore a place with a bit of history behind it. Built in 1907 the interior boasts Art Nouveau fireplaces and the Mediterranean Roof Garden – outside there’s a cosy sitting area lit up with open fire lamps – all very romantic.

Inside it’s surprisingly small and intimate. I really despise restaurants that feel like your in a school canteen. You know the type, waiters flurrying about aimlessly, clanging of plates, music too loud – must I go on? The Belle Époque was absolutely the opposite. We were greeted by wonderful staff and the starters, main and dessert all came out in quick succession.
Now the important bit, the food! I started with Leek and Potato, Truffle, Duck Egg – absolutely divine!

We were also given the choice of three different types of bread rolls and enjoyed a parsnip mousse. My main was quite honestly exquisite. Usually with fish dishes the usual run of the mill ‘salmon, pollock, sea bass’ come to mind, right? I was glad there was finally an offering of something a little bit different. I tried Pan Fried Skate Wing with Caper Butter and Confit Potatoes. I should warn you these are big portions, the skate wing fish was cooked to perfection – really juicy and meaty.

Then on to dessert, Rhubarb Cannelloni custard and gingerbread – I have a sweet tooth and this really hit the spot! And what do ya know, it even matched my nails!

Overall, I left Belle Époque an incredibly satisfied customer – this restaurant really exceeded my expectations. At the moment they are running a brilliant offer for 50% off your meal and by anyone’s estimation it’s an absolute bargain. This is 5* food and the hospitable staff are an added bonus – what a fabulous evening, another visit is definitely on the cards!

Taken from Manchester Confidential, 4th February 2015

“It’s (The Belle Epoque) still probably one of the best five restaurants buildings in the North West with the added benefit that it’s only 25 minutes from the city.  The name says it all, Belle Epoque, built in 1907 the gaff wouldn’t look out of place in a Harry Potter movie.

The food has changed.  Whilst this is not an official review, Gordo is happy to place it on his official ‘Gordo Go’ list. Whilst still in the ownership of the Mooney Family, it appears the kitchen has been cleared out in the last few years by the current owner, Matthew Mooney, re-invigorating the menu.

Service is very good.  The staff know what they are doing and operate with a wry smile on their faces.

Food is serious stuff based on cookbooks from the Belle Epoque era; wild duck, seared cod cheeks, Chateaubriand (with made-in-the-kitchen béarnaise) and wood pigeon.  The vegetarian dishes have been praised. The triple cooked chips are bang on.

This place is the whole deal; yes, they still do the weddings, but if you’re looking for a place for a romantic meal, a family meal, somewhere as an antidote to dirty food, where you can put your glad rags on, then go. It’s an experience. A delightful one”.
